Frequently Asked Questions

Why do conductors have to be derated when bundled? +
Each energized wire produces I²R heat. When multiple wires are trapped in a raceway, heat cannot dissipate into surrounding air, causing insulation thermal breakdown.
Can I use the 90°C column for derating THHN wire? +
Yes! NEC 110.14(C) permits starting derating calculations from the 90°C ampacity column, provided the final derated ampacity does not exceed the terminal temperature rating (usually 75°C).
Do neutral wires count as current-carrying conductors? +
In balanced 3-phase 4-wire systems, the neutral carries only harmonic current and is not counted. In single-phase 120V circuits or multiwire branch circuits with nonlinear loads, neutrals must be counted.
