Calculations adhere to standard electrical engineering physics and National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) regulations.

Engineering Principles & Calculations

This calculator uses the exact mathematical relationships between Conductor Count by AWG (14, 12, 10, 8, 6 AWG), Number of Receptacles/Switches, Internal Clamps, Ground Wires to determine Required Box Volume (cu. in.), Standard Box Recommendation (e.g., 4" Square x 1-1/2" or 2-1/8" deep). In practical installations, factors such as ambient raceway temperature, harmonic distortion, duty cycle continuous operation, and conductor impedance must be accounted for by a certified electrician.

Determines minimum required electrical box volume (cubic inches) based on conductor count, internal cable clamps, support fittings, device yokes, and ground conductors.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How many volume units does a duplex receptacle count as? +
Under NEC 314.16(B)(4), each mounting yoke containing one or more devices counts as a double volume allowance (2x) based on the largest conductor connected to the device.
How do equipment grounding conductors count toward box fill? +
Under NEC 314.16(B)(5), all equipment grounding conductors in the box count as a single volume allowance (1x). If there are more than 4 grounds, each additional ground counts as 1/4 volume allowance.
Do wire pigtails inside the box count? +
No! Wire pigtails that originate inside the box and do not exit the enclosure do not count toward box fill.
